INSTRUCTIONAL PARA EDUCATOR – English Language Learners Program
PURPOSE:To serve as an integral member of the instructional team to provide services to individual students who participate in the English Language Learners ("ELL") Program provided by the Stamford Public Schools. This can include services in the ESL Program, Bilingual Program, the New Arrivals Program or other programs designed to serve the needs of our non-English Home Language families.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Reports to the Director of ELL & World Language Programs and is supervised in the classroom by Certified Staff Professional
EXAMPLE OFDUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with individual students or small groups of students under the supervision of a certified teacher to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
- Record achievements and diagnostic tests, under the direction of the teacher for individual students or groups of students.
- Assist the teacher in devising learning experiences to reinforcing skills based on the language developmental level of the individual students.
- May work in a particular classroom assignment or work in a variety of classrooms throughout the day, based on programmatic needs.
- Assist the teacher in the handling, operation and care of equipment used in the classroom, including media and technology
- Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher
- Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, and in other non-classroom activities.
- Check notebooks, correct papers and supervise testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher.
- Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
- Assist the teacher in drill work, large group reading or storytelling.
- Exhibits a clear understanding of techniques and strategies for working with ELL students and uses them when applicable
- Alert the teacher(s) regarding any problem or special information related to an individual student.
- Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and sensitivity of information about students as is expected of a certified teacher.
- Participate in professional development training programs, as required.
- Perform related duties as appropriate for the position as assigned by the Director of ELL and World Languages.
- Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work set and assigned by the teacher.
- Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction as needed.
- Assist in providing a well-organized, smoothly functioning school environment.
- Assists certified teacher in the maintenance of appropriate documentation as required by federal law on ELLs.
