Compensation

The standard daily rate for new substitutes is $160.00 per day, returning substitutes is $165.00 per day, and the rate for staff certified in CT rate is $185.00 per day. Please note that an additional rate may apply for retired Plainfield teachers.

Schedule and Time Commitment

Substitute teachers must arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the day to pick up materials and assignments and allow 10 minutes after student dismissal for finalization of paperwork and daily checkout procedures.

Educational Requirements

Candidates must hold at least a bachelor's degree in any major from an accredited institution and provide transcripts verifying their highest level of education.

Additionally, fingerprinting and comprehensive background checks are mandated by the State of Connecticut for all new employees of the Plainfield Public Schools.

In some circumstances, an individual who has not yet achieved a bachelor's degree may be considered for the state's ED 174 waiver based on alternative post-secondary education and significant professional experience working with children.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Substitute teachers are expected to implement provided lesson plans, deliver lessons across different subjects, assign and explain homework, and adapt methods to meet student needs. Classroom management is essential, requiring substitutes to maintain discipline, enforce school policies, foster a respectful atmosphere, and supervise students during class, lunch, recess, and hallway transitions. Administrative tasks include taking attendance, recording grades, distributing materials, completing daily reports for the regular teacher, and handling necessary paperwork.

Furthermore, substitutes must assist students with assignments, provide guidance, and ensure their overall well-being and safety, all while communicating effectively with school staff, administration, and potentially parents to ensure a smooth transition.
