Job Description
A Tax Experienced Senior, Core Tax Services is responsible for utilizing research skills, applying tax foundational knowledge to understand potential tax issues, gathering client information necessary for filing, participating in tax planning, recognizing and communicating potential risks, preparing tax accrual work papers, and working with tax software applications to complete tax returns for review. The role serves as the primary client contact for general questions and may supervise and review the work of Core Tax Services Associates.
Job Duties Tax Compliance- Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and ensure that self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
- Manage projects by planning the tax process and the procedures to be performed with quality.
- Answer preparer questions and coordinate engagement by communicating expectations and procedures with preparers.
- Conduct detailed reviews on all returns, provide appropriate review notes to preparers, and raise potential tax issues.
- Meet internal deadlines to match client expectations for timely delivery of service.
- Identify book‑to‑tax differences.
- Develop and monitor project budgets; schedule resources; identify out‑of‑scope activity.
- Identify when research is needed, frame issues to be researched, and report the analysis clearly and concisely.
- Apply the most current Firm and professional standards for the preparation of WTA and tax returns.
- Correctly and proactively apply Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Prepare provision work papers and discuss with appropriate team members.
- Identify and discuss uncertain positions with team members.
- Review and prepare footnote disclosures in compliance with ASC 740.
- Utilize and manage STS.
- Draft tax provision memorandums.
- Communicate with Assurance counterparts to plan tax accrual reviews in a timely manner.
- Assist in developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes.
- Identify consulting opportunities to reduce client’s tax liability.
- Provide efficient and effective support for client consulting projects.
- Gather relevant information for controversy work efficiently.
- Document all significant tax positions in memoranda, and ensure proper documentation is archived to Go File Room .
- Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non‑tax benefits.
- Prepare studies of tax implications and offer clients alternative courses of action.
- May supervise and manage the day‑to‑day work assignments of Core Tax Services Associates.
- Provide verbal and written performance feedback to Core Tax Associates as necessary.
- Act as mentor to Core Tax Services Associates.
- Perform other duties as required by the Firm.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics or statistics, or a Bachelor’s degree in another focus area with CPA certification (or authorization to test for the CPA exam) required.
- Master’s in accountancy or taxation preferred.
- Three (3) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience preferred.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
- Prior basic supervisory experience preferred.
- CPA certification, attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (or equivalent) preferred.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
