Head Custodian ; Promotional

Open only to current City of Stamford employees who meet the minimal qualifications.

Under the general direction of a department or school head, performs supervisory work in the cleaning and maintenance of a City building or school; has immediate responsibility for a large building or school or supervision over a number of smaller buildings or schools; supervises, directs and participates in the work of subordinate custodial personnel; does related work as required.

• Performs related duties as required.
• Makes regular inspections of buildings and grounds to maintain proper cleaning and maintenance schedules.
• Schedules and assigns cleaning and maintenance work of subordinate personnel.
• Makes recommendations to superior for improvements or new equipment.
• Trains employees in new work methods.
• Insures that buildings are heated, cleaned, locked and unlocked for all activities.
• Keeps records and makes reports of supplies used and activities in and around the building.
• Assists in cleaning and maintenance activities which pertain to custodian, giving special attention to the more complex problems involved with particular repairs.
• UAW Positions in Office of Operations:
• Negotiate with vendors for price of various supplies, equipment and services.
• Schedule, monitor and supervise contractors’ performance of services.
• Prepare purchase orders for supplies and equipment, verify receipt, approve for payment, add to inventory and oversee delivery to designated locations.
• May operate and perform routine preventative maintenance upon heavy equipment such as scissor lifts, bucket trucks, tractors and roll-off dump trucks.
• Attends staff meetings with supervisors to provide and receive operational information.

• Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Good knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment.
• Good knowledge of the principles of fire safety and systems involved in the care of buildings, including OSHA regulations.
• Skill in making repairs.
• Ability to plan, supervise and direct the work of custodial staff. ? Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Promotional:
Two (2) years of experience in the rank of Custodian with the City of Stamford.
