Responsibilities
A clinically competent, registered, professional nurse who assumes responsibility and accountability for the post anesthesia patient and their families in collaboration with all other members of the health care team through the nursing process and in conjunction with the policies and procedures of Stamford Health System.
- Respects and protects the patient’s rights to confidentiality and privacy and discloses information only for professional purposes which are in the patient’s best interests with full consideration of their legal rights.
- Provides safe patient care by verifying patient identification and assuring the presence of the necessary documents, laboratory tests, consents, equipment, and radiology images.
- Delivers patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation and evaluation.
- Practices the 5 Rights to patient safety when administering medications, blood or blood products and treatments. (right patient, right medication, right route, right dose, right time)
- Adhere to aseptic practices to protect patients from injury, minimize wound contamination and reduce patient risk for surgical site infection.
- Demonstrates competency in IV insertion and discontinuation of same.
- Maintains patent airway, including adult and pediatric patients.
- Manages monitoring and respiratory equipment, fluid lines, tubes, drains and catheters.
- Applies basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology and pharmacology for optimal surgical patient care.
- Comply with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants and other hazardous substances.
- Uses good nursing judgment in determining appropriate nursing action and exhibits control in emergency situations.
- Documents pertinent information, observations and all aspects of patient care clearly, concisely and in a timely manner.
- Assists with the development and clinical precepting of students and new employees.
- Maintains equipment and utilizes supplies in a safe, cost effective manner.
