Job Description
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies.
We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.
Our Vision
- We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
- We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
- The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond
Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.
The Opportunity
The Arias Group at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub is looking for a curious, energetic, passionate, and talented Research Associate to join us. We are interested in exploring the mechanisms used by viruses to hijack the protein synthesis machinery. Our ultimate goal is to identify factors required for viral replication but dispensable for normal cell function that could be exploited to develop new antiviral strategies.
Our primary research will evaluate the antiviral target potential of previously identified factors and establish methods to identify new candidate targets, including CRISPR-based screens and Ribosome Profiling. This role will be based in San Francisco initially, with a planned transition to Redwood City in two years.
You will
- Under the mentorship and supervision of senior researchers, plan and carry out experiments designed to understand host and virus dynamics during an infection - Create and maintain a library of cell lines as needed for various studies
- Learn and utilize cutting edge techniques involving microscopy, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, CRISPR, drug screens and high throughput sequencing
- Work with personnel from different research platforms (proteomics, genomics, imaging, cell biology, data science)
- Troubleshoot protocols, maintain detailed records, analyze results, and contribute ideas to research projects
You have
Essential –
- Bachelor's degree in a life science or associated field with relevant coursework including molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and microbiology/virology - Minimum of 1 year of experience with wet laboratory techniques (DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, cloning/construct design)
- Hands on tissue culture experience
- Familiarity with gene manipulation and expression analysis methods (gene over-expression and stable expression, RNAi, CRISPR, qPCR, sequencing)
- Familiarity with protein tagging, expression and purification processes
- Experience in data collection, analysis, and interpretation
- Attention to detail and very strong organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to multi-task and work both independently and collaboratively across platforms
Nice to have –
- Master’s degree in life sciences or related field - Experience working with viruses
- Previous research, job or internship experience in an academic or industry setting involving one year of tissue culture experience.
- Experience with proteomics and transcriptomics
- Experience with drug screens
Compensation
The San Francisco, CA base pay range for this role is Research Associate I = $52,000.00 - $77,000.00 and Research Associate II = $67,000.00 - $99,000.00. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range…
