Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notifications on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

• Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
• Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
• Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
• Assists with surveying related work.
• Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
• Operates light and heavy equipment.
• Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
• Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor providing input on team members career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent in general education.

Experience: 5 years of roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
• Must have a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class A CDL, without transmission restrictions and an N endorsement at the time of hire.

Considerable knowledge of:

• Inventory/stock control procedures.

• Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.

• Subject to atmospheric conditions – fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation.
• Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
• Required to wear protective gear – respirator, hard hat, or other device.
• Works frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; areas that can cause claustrophobia.
• Works in narrow aisles or passageways.
• Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
• Sitting – prolonged periods of time.
• Climbing – ascending/descending ladders and stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
• Balancing – walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
• Stooping – bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
• Kneeling, crouching, crawling.

• Standing – prolonged periods of time.
