Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor

The Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor reports to the Head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. This is a tenure-track faculty position. The successful candidate will be an engineer and scholar with a strong commitment to teaching and conducting externally funded research. The faculty member will contribute to the University's three primary missions of teaching, research, and service.

Salary Grade: UC

For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department.

Department Profile:

The Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) Department, established in 1962, is one of the eight academic departments in the James Worth Bagley College of Engineering. The ISE department is currently ranked 25th among all ISE programs nationally in research and development expenditures according to the National Science Foundation's (NSF) HERD ranking. The department offers an ABET-accredited bachelor's program in Industrial & Systems Engineering at the Starkville, Engineering on the Coast, and online, as well as master's and doctoral degrees at the Starkville campus and online.

Current department enrollment across the three locations is 291 undergraduate students, 63 master's students, and 84 doctoral students. The department is currently supported by ten tenured/tenure-track faculty, three teaching-track faculty, one instructor, and four staff. Research expenditures totaled approximately $9 million in 2024.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following examples illustrate the types of duties assigned to this position. The absence of a specific duty does not exclude it from the position if the work is a logical assignment of the position.

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Industrial and Systems Engineering and serve as a research and project advisor to students at all levels.
  • Serve as an academic advisor to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Advance the knowledge base of Industrial and Systems Engineering through research.
  • Supervise graduate student research.
  • Develop and sustain a strong, externally funded research program.
  • Publish the results of independent and sponsored research in peer-reviewed archival journals.
  • Provide service to the Department, College, and University.
  • Engage in scholarly and professional activities that maintain expertise and leadership in Industrial and Systems Engineering.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering or a closely related field is required. Candidates must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Professional registration, or the ability to obtain professional registration, is preferred. Previous teaching experience is also preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Other qualifications include strong leadership and interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative research environment. Successful candidates will be appointed to an academic-year position within the tenure system, with tenure considered as appropriate based on qualifications and experience. Candidates are also expected to enhance the reputation of Mississippi State University through their scholarly, professional, and service activities.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

No unusual physical requirements are associated with this position. The role requires no heavy lifting, and most work is performed in a comfortable indoor environment.
