GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY
Our Co-Op Program delivers unparalleled real-world experience through a variety of engineering related projects. Participants are encouraged to hone their problem-solving abilities and develop technical skills through challenging project assignments.
Our Civil Engineer Co-Op will perform a range of professional engineering work in gathering and compiling data, checking designs; preparing plans, details, estimates, reports and specifications for a wide variety of civil engineering projects; and does related work as required. The co-op tasks are diverse, depending on our current projects. On any given day our co-op student could be working on the following types of activities: roadway design, drainage analysis and design, utility design, traffic analysis, planning and representing the Engineering Department and the City of Starkville in an official capacity.
This position will be paid only for actual hours worked, not to exceed forty (40) hours per week. This position will not be eligible for benefits.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Assist with preparing plans, specifications, and cost estimates of various capital improvement projects (CIP)
- Obtains all required permits and approvals; and assists in project advertisements and bid selections
- Be involved with the construction and installation of the designed improvements to insure they are in accordance with accepted engineering practices and City standards
- Supports the relationship between the City of Starkville and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors, the public and City staff
- Maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information
- Performs other duties, as assigned
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Computers and applicable software.
- Business English, spelling and arithmetic.
- Records management policies, procedures, and processes.
Ability to:
- Prioritize and schedule workload, to ensure completion when faced with deadlines or emergencies.
- Thoroughly carry out oral and written instructions.
- Keep accurate records; prepare documents and spreadsheets using Word and Excel.
- Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
- Effectively present instructions and information in writing and verbally to co-workers, the general public and employees.
- Coursework in Civil Engineering pursuing a BS;
Junior or Senior classification; GPA of 2.75 or higher.
- All applicants must be available at the beginning of a semester.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License and acceptable MVR.
All types of weather and temperature conditions. Work and/or walk for long periods of time on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Work is performed in an office environment and in close proximity to other workers. Requires working varying hours, weekends, and holidays. Work environment is informal, team-oriented, having both routine and variable tasks with variable pace and pressure.
Work is performed in/outdoors.
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to operate assigned equipment. Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, and climbing; standing, sitting, reaching at and above shoulder height, kneeling, balancing above ground, pushing and pulling, crawling, twisting at waist, upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck; lifting of objects weighing up to 75 lbs.
Vision:
See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens, printed documents, equipment dials and gauges, color vision acuity.
Hearing:
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
