Position Function:

The Shelter Program at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking to hire an Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor to join the team of 5 faculty members, 1 rehire retiree, and 3 technicians. The Shelter Medicine Program provides a spay/neuter services to 25+ shelters and rescue groups in Mississippi. The Shelter Program also provides shelter visits for third year veterinary students to perform basic physical examinations, health maintenance evaluations, and population level recommendations for the shelter.

The Shelter program also provides training to graduated veterinarians on assessing professional students and veterinarians. The funding for this position is associated with the Nutramax Veterinary Education Training Program. The position is supported by gift funding provided annually for up to five years from Nutramax with the possibility of renewable after the current agreement expires. It will be a 100% soft money-funded position with a one-year renewable contract that can be renewed for up to five years.

The Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor is expected to work collegially with other staff and faculty members to support the vision and mission of the Shelter Medicine Program. The Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor will receive mentorship and training in high volume, high quality spay/neuter surgical techniques and in teaching and training. Once trained, the successful applicant will provide leadership, direction supervision, training, and assessment for veterinary students and house officers in soft tissue surgical skill acquisition with the Shelter Medicine Program.

Duties may also include working with house officers and other faculty members to accompany, supervise, and teach veterinary students during walk‑thru consultations at area animal shelters and rescue groups, providing written plans for improvement, assistance in disease outbreak situations, and management of various medical cases within the shelters. The Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor will also be involved with our new Shelter Medicine Clinic.

They will also supervise second year surgery labs. Additionally, the Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor may be asked to assist in medical and surgical care for the animals under the stewardship of the Homeward Bound Program, with assistance by other CVM faculty and staff. Providing the occasional didactic lecture or rounds presentation for veterinary students could be included. Weekend emergency duty will be very limited but may consist of providing support by phone or in person for Community Veterinary Services boarding patients.

The faculty member will also provided surgical skill training to graduated veterinarians.

Minimum Qualifications:

Essential qualifications include a DVM or equivalent degree. Ability to obtain licensure in Mississippi.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

ABDs or degree pending considered (all but DISS):

N/A.

Preferred Qualifications:

Teaching and clinical/surgical experience is highly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff, and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands. Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
