Computer Specialist , II, III, or Senior

Mississippi State University is hiring a Computer Specialist I, II, III, or Senior to manage high-performance computing infrastructure at the MSU High Performance Computing Collaboratory (HPC²). The specialist keeps Linux servers, virtual machines, and HPC clusters running for scientific, engineering, and research applications, and helps plan upgrades and manage system security.

• Installs, configures, and manages Linux operating systems on physical and virtual servers, desktops, and HPC clusters
• Plans and implements system upgrades, migrations, and life cycle and change management processes
• Creates and supports virtual machines and containers based on business needs
• Monitors and optimizes system performance, including resource allocation and load balancing
• Troubleshoots system hardware, software, and operating systems to preserve data integrity
• Implements security best practices across the computing environments
• Builds and maintains the software infrastructure for the HPC environment, including utility scripts and software stacks
• Trains and provides operational oversight to junior-level system administrators
• Prefers experience with HPC job scheduling tools such as Slurm, PBS Pro, or Moab, and parallel file systems like Lustre
• Requires a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, with experience requirements rising by level (4, 8, or 10 years) up to Senior
• Requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residency
