Job DescriptionREPORTS TO: Principal and Assistant Superintendent of Federal Programs
SUMMARY: School nurses oversee the emotional, mental, physical and social health of students. School nurses also manage students who have chronic health conditions and students with disabilities. This includes giving them medication as needed and working with parents and teachers to create and enforce care plans. School nurses perform a critical role within the school health program by addressing the major health problems experienced by children.
This role includes providing preventive and screening services, health education and assistance with decision-making about health, and immunization against preventable diseases. Provide leadership, community/public health, care coordination, quality improvement.
Job Responsibilities
- Promotes and protects the optimal health status of school age children.
- Provides health assessments such as vision, hearing, dental, and scoliosis as well as EPSDT screening and initiates referrals to parents, school personnel or community resources on abnormal findings.
- Develops and implements a health plan and maintains complete and accurate records per HIPAA guidelines.
- Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual students, including Asthma Action Plans and Immunization Compliance Forms.
- Provides treatment for minor illness and injury within the standard of nursing care and school nurse protocol as per school district standing orders and parental permission.
- Administers daily medication that must be given during school hours with physician order and signed parental permission form.
- Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for illness and injuries.
- Promotes and assists in control of communicable diseases.
- Provides age-appropriate counseling and education to students concerning such issues as abstinence, teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, alcohol/substance abuse, nutrition, hygiene and physical fitness in order to facilitate responsible decision making.
- Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a health professional liaison between home, school and community.
- Provides consultation in the form of health policies, goals and objectives and assist with school Wellness Policy as needed.
- Participates in IEP Plan development as needed.
- Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Mississippi and is licensed by the Mississippi Board of Nursing.
- Certified in CPR.
