Non-invasive Genetics Lab Supervisor

Position will provide support for multiple research projects using non-invasive genetic sampling in the Carnivore and Population Ecology Lab at Mississippi State University. The successful candidate will perform duties in the field and laboratory to support black bear and coyote research, and will organize, manage and supervise activities in the genetics laboratory. The position will be primarily located at Mississippi State University (Starkville, MS) with occasional travel to field sites in Mississippi and Louisiana or to meet with state agency collaborators.

Salary commensurate with qualifications.

Essential job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Independently support and execute research activities in the genetics lab, including but not limited to data collection, sample processing, and project organization.
  • Train and oversee lab technicians in DNA extraction from low quantity samples (training provided) with opportunities to train and implement GT-seq methods to identify individuals.
  • Keep inventory for lab supplies and place orders as needed.
  • Maintain lab spaces and equipment.
  • Ensure lab meets safety requirements and standards.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED and 4 years of relevant field/lab experience-or-Bachelor's degree with major course work in a curriculum appropriate for the field of assignment
    -or-Two years of post-secondary training in a curriculum appropriate for the field of assignment and two years of field and lab work experience including experimentation and research studies or closely related work experience-and-Valid U.S. driver's license

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in ecology, wildlife, or related field.
  • Laboratory experience, including working with low-quality low-quantity DNA samples
  • Previous field experience or a strong desire to learn methods
  • Experience with database management
  • Experience managing multiple technicians

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Must have the knowledge and ability to work with minimal supervision necessary to perform duties at a high level, oversee technicians in routine operational duties, and prioritize day-to-day workloads.
  • Strong interpersonal skills as daily interactions with landowners, state agency personnel, and other stakeholders will occur

Working conditions and physical effort:

  • Willingness to work early mornings, late nights, and weekends when necessary. Position includes supervision of and collaborative work with technicians in both laboratory and field settings, with associated potential exposure to lab chemicals and biological samples, inclement weather, mud, insects, and native flora and fauna. Travel may be frequent during sampling periods, with overnight stays. Job frequently requires standing, walking, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 25 pounds.

    Job occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, talking, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
