General Position Summary
This is manual work requiring considerable skill in the construction, maintenance, and repair of city streets, sewers, drainage systems, facilities, equipment, and property. Work involves considerable knowledge in laying out work, and performing the skilled portions of the work involving heavy manual labor.
Essential Job Functions- Assist with the repair and maintenance of City streets, right-of-ways and drainage ditches.
- Do pick and shovel work in grading, patching, and maintaining improved and unimproved streets; sweep, paint, and apply hot mix and seals; spread sand or stone chips by hand or mechanical spreader on asphalt or tar; excavate streets to grade and load materials into trucks; spread gravel, stone, or other construction materials; perform a wide variety of similar tasks in the reconstruction, repair, and maintenance of streets.
- Load truck, ensure proper tools and equipment have been loaded; ensure that all tools are cleaned and accounted for at the end of the day; clean up job sites.
- Pour concrete for curbs and gutters, build forms and boxes; finish cement; and remove forms and boxes from set cement.
- Replace repairs or install traffic and other signs; install signs for special events.
- Operate various types of equipment such as jack hammers, air compressors, generators, shovels, rakes, brooms, chainsaws, traffic safety devices, hydraulic power units, and associated attachments. May drive various trucks or equipment to the worksite; perform a daily inventory of working tools.
- May perform the work of an equipment operator.
- Ensure proper safety precautions have been taken; set out traffic cones; put out barricades; flag traffic.
- Require regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and as a team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the common practices, methods, and materials used in maintenance or construction.
- Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in skill labor work.
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
- Ability to operate various types and sizes of equipment in area of assigned work.
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency is desired and experience in maintenance and construction work; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Working Environment and Physical DemandsEnvironment: Work is performed outside in adverse weather conditions and exposes the employee to loud noise levels from machines and trucks, chemicals, wetness, gases, sharp objects, and unsanitary conditions. Work also exposes employee to vibrations, diesel fumes from machinery, animal and insect bites, and hazards associated with working around traffic, heavy equipment and in trenches. Protective equipment is required such as gloves, safety glasses, boots, hard hats, orange vests and traffic flags.
Physical: Work requires the physical ability to lift heavy objects for sustained periods of time; stand or sit for extended periods of time in confined spaces; walk for long distances over uneven terrain; finger dexterity to operate a variety of machines and tools; and the ability to climb in and out of ditches and manholes plus over fences. Work also involves the ability to crawl, bend, and move their back and arms while pushing and pulling.
