Description The OpportunityRETTEW is seeking a Water/Wastewater Engineer II to help design infrastructure that protects public health, strengthens communities, and advances more sustainable approaches to water and resource management.
You’ll work on drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects while also having opportunities to contribute to innovative work involving water reuse, anaerobic digestion, organics diversion, renewable natural gas, and the water-energy nexus
.
This role is designed for an early-career engineer who has established a foundation in water/wastewater engineering and is ready to take on greater design responsibility, broaden their technical experience, and continue developing toward Professional Engineer licensure.
You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and Project Managers who can provide technical guidance while giving you increasing ownership and responsibility as your skills develop.
What You’ll Do- Perform engineering calculations, analyses, and design tasks for drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
- Support the planning and design of drinking water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, pump stations, and water, wastewater, and biosolids treatment facilities.
- Contribute to innovative projects involving water reuse, anaerobic digestion, organics diversion, renewable natural gas, and other water-energy initiatives.
- Prepare engineering plans, specifications, technical reports, calculations, and other project documentation.
- Use CADD and engineering software to develop designs and project deliverables.
- Perform hydraulic calculations and support system modeling based on project needs.
- Research municipal codes, regulatory requirements, permitting criteria, and applicable engineering standards.
- Prepare permit applications and supporting technical documentation.
- Collect, evaluate, and document field data to support engineering decisions and project development.
- Coordinate with Project Managers, engineers, technical professionals, clients, and regulatory agencies as part of project delivery.
- Support project schedules, budgets, and deliverable milestones while developing a stronger understanding of successful project management.
- Participate in construction-phase services, including field visits, document and submittal reviews, contractor questions, and coordination of field issues.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT/EI) certification.
- At least two years of professional engineering experience, including experience supporting drinking water and/or wastewater projects.
- Working knowledge of engineering design principles and the ability to apply standard engineering methods with increasing independence.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to organize assignments, manage priorities, and contribute effectively within collaborative project teams.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project and client locations as needed.
- Ability to work from RETTEW’s Mechanicsburg or State College office as required for this position.
- Experience with drinking water distribution, wastewater collection, pump station, or treatment-system design.
- Experience with hydraulic calculations or modeling.
- Experience with AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D.
- Experience with WaterGEMS and/or SewerGEMS.
- Experience using Bluebeam for engineering or project delivery.
- Experience preparing permit applications or coordinating with regulatory agencies.
- Experience working in an engineering consulting environment.
- Progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
- Work on infrastructure that directly affects public health, environmental quality, and community resilience.
- Gain experience across drinking water, wastewater, treatment, distribution, collection, and emerging water-energy technologies.
- Contribute to innovative work involving water reuse, anaerobic digestion, organics diversion, and renewable natural gas.
