Data Scientist, AI Engineer (Applied/Software)
Position Summary
We are seeking highly motivated Computer Engineers to join our Access and Evaluation (A&E) Department within the Multimodal Sensing and Systems Division of the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State. The role focuses on nascent technologies in electromagnetics, electromagnetic maneuver warfare, quantum sciences, and sensors through cross‑division and cross‑office collaborations.
Responsibilities- Develop software and approaches for full‑stack development, including low‑level code, hardware interaction, cloud solutions, data engineering for storage and retrieval, and front‑end tools for data analysts.
- Conduct data analysis, incorporating multiple modalities and formats, and perform exploratory analysis to test hypotheses.
- Implement, test, and evaluate services that compare models for solving the same problem; support testing and evaluation of software and models.
- Develop and implement data analytics techniques and applications to transform raw data into meaningful information using data‑oriented programming languages and visualization software.
- Develop and apply algorithms and prototypes to extract and analyze information from large structured and unstructured datasets that support analytics objectives.
- Visualize, interpret, and report data findings in dynamic data reports.
- Python
- Linux, including familiarity with Bash and shell scripting
- Cloud architectures
- Additional programming languages such as Java or C/C++
- Development of software within a DoD development environment
- Development or evaluation of AI/ML models
- Degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, or applied mathematics
- Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret or Top Secret level or higher, and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required.
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science. Depending on the role level: 5+ years of relevant experience (Advanced Professional), 2+ years for Intermediate Professional, or no prior experience required for Professional. No certifications are required.
LocationFully onsite in State College, PA.
Background Checks & ClearancesAll positions require successful completion of a background check(s) in accordance with University policies. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and will be notified during the interview process if a government background investigation is required. A pre‑employment drug screen is also required.
Salary & BenefitsThe salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $76,700.00 - $. The proposed salary range may be impacted by geographic differential.
