Job Summary
The Registered Nurse in the Perioperative Outpatient Surgical Center is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to surgical patients, including preoperative assessment, intraoperative support, and postoperative recovery. This role involves patient advocacy, clinical assessment, medication administration, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe and effective patient care. The nurse also supports procedural efficiency, patient education, and resource management in a fast-paced surgical environment.
Responsibilities- Assess and respond to the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients through observation and interaction.
- Implement nursing care plans and treat identified patient problems using professional judgment and skills.
- Communicate patient assessments and coordinate care with appropriate healthcare team members.
- Demonstrate knowledge of diagnostic measures including labs, radiology, and EKG, and perform IV therapy.
- Transcribe and implement physician orders accurately and timely during patient admission to the surgical center.
- Document patient clinical records accurately and ensure all required surgical documentation and site marking are complete.
- Provide patient and family education regarding procedures and care instructions.
- Manage supplies and equipment efficiently to control costs without compromising patient care quality.
- Assist with housekeeping duties such as cleaning and bed preparation as needed.
- Provide nursing care in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), including airway maintenance, vital signs monitoring, pain control, and consultation with surgeons and anesthesiologists.
- Evaluate patients using discharge criteria to safely transition them to Phase 2 recovery.
- Facilitate patient transfers to medical centers when necessary.
- Serve as a float nurse to support staffing needs, maintain communication, and ensure workflow efficiency.
- Work in specialized areas such as pain management and eye laser procedure rooms as assigned.
- Assist with anesthesia supplies, nerve blocks, and emergency equipment including crash and malignant hyperthermia carts.
- Participate in committee meetings, suggest improvements, and seek guidance as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Active Registered Nurse license in the state of employment.
- Minimum of 2 years nursing experience, preferably in perioperative or surgical settings.
- Clinical skills in patient assessment, IV therapy, and medication administration.
- Proficient in documentation and use of electronic medical records.
- Strong communication and patient education skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.
- Experience in Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) nursing.
- Knowledge of anesthesia supplies and emergency procedures.
- Familiarity with pain management and eye laser procedures.
- Participation in quality improvement or surgical committee activities.
- May be required to float between different surgical and procedural areas.
- Must be familiar with emergency protocols including crash cart and malignant hyperthermia cart usage.
- Patient care involves perioperative and post-anesthesia environments requiring vigilance and critical thinking.
- Day shift schedule in an outpatient surgical center.
- Shift assignments may vary based on unit needs and float responsibilities.
