Position Overview
The Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Core Facility within the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences is seeking a highly qualified Research Technologist (Core Research Technologist - Advanced Professional) to join our team.
This role provides critical technical expertise across the full spectrum of proteomics and small molecule analysis, including sample preparation, instrument operation, and advanced data interpretation. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting a diverse research community and enabling high-impact scientific discovery.
Our Core is a shared instrumentation center supporting more than 50 laboratories and over 100 researchers across multiple departments and colleges at Penn State, as well as external collaborators. We operate a cutting‑edge instrumentation suite, including:
- Thermo Orbitrap Eclipse with Vanquish Neo nano-LC
- Thermo Q Exactive with Vanquish Flex LC
- Bruker Ultrafle Xtreme MALDI TOF-TOF
- Perform hands‑on operation, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance of LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) systems.
- Prepare samples for downstream mass spectrometry workflows, including proteomics and small molecule analysis.
- Conduct general wet‑lab procedures in chemistry, biochemistry, or related fields.
- Execute proteomics bioinformatics workflows, including MS data analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
- Collaborate with faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and students to design experiments and provide technical guidance.
- Deliver high‑quality results and maintain detailed documentation for facility users.
- Strong working knowledge of liquid chromatography (LC) and mass spectrometry (MS).
- Hands‑on experience operating LC-MS instrumentation.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects with changing priorities.
- Proteomics or metabolomics experience.
- Small molecule analysis experience.
- Bioinformatics and MS data interpretation skills.
- Wet‑lab skills in biochemistry or molecular biology.
- Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
- Collaborative mindset with a customer service orientation.
- Ability to effectively support a diverse multidisciplinary user base.

Minimum Education and ExperienceBachelor’s Degree; 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted. No required certifications.
Salary and BenefitsThe salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $51,000.00 – $74,000.00.
