Position: Equipment Operator (Utilities)

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Penn State is searching for a full time Equipment Operator (Utilities) - Grade 4 to join the team.

Duties include:

  • Operate various types of construction equipment including bulldozer, grader, backhoe, front-end loader, etc., to grade and move soil and dirt, clear land, remove trees, excavate, shape banks, cut ditches, grade roadways, subgrade lawns, load trucks, etc.
  • Assemble, deliver, secure and brace various trench-shoring systems, concrete forms and scaffolding
  • Complete trench safety forms
  • Use equipment to determine slope on roadways, sidewalks, etc.
  • Determine line and grade for new and existing utilities
  • Read and interpret drawings, sketches, and blueprints including erosion and sedimentation plans
  • Use appropriate monitor to test confined spaces and act as confined space coordinator
  • Assist with removal of material from around utility lines
  • Assist mechanics with placement and installation of piping, conduit, etc.
  • Implement work zone traffic control measures utilizing the appropriate signs, fencing, flags, lights, barricades and clothing to safely direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic during utility projects
  • Position equipment on truck or trailer for transporting
  • Drive truck to transport equipment, plow snow, carry dirt, etc.
  • Maintain, clean, and lubricate equipment; service equipment with fuel and engine oil; maintain proper air pressure in tires; check oil and water levels and battery
  • Attach or detach equipment accessories
  • Detect unusual conditions and needed repairs and report to supervisor
  • Operate jackhammer, pavement breaker, tamper, etc., using mobile air-compressor unit

Job Requirements: Requires the use of shop mathematics together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, various types of adjustable measuring instruments and the training generally applicable in a particular or specialized occupation. Equivalent to 1 to 3 years applied trades training. Must possess a Pennsylvania Commercial Driver`s License Class A without Restrictions L, E, O, Z. The successful candidate will be required to obtain NCCCO Certified RIG-1 and Signal person certification within 6 months of hire.

Over 1 year up to and including 3 years of effective experience.

Work Schedule:

6:00 a.m.

- 4:30 p.m.

Days Off:
Saturday, Sunday, Monday

MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE

1 to 3 years of effective experience

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Certified Crane Operator with RIG-I and Signal person designations - National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators, Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Class A - Pennsylvania Department of Transportation

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. This position is subject to federal Department of Transportation testing for alcohol and controlled substances (49 CFR PART 40), and physical examination requirements as per PA.
