* NYC Parks is transforming what was once the world's largest landfill into a sweeping 2,200 acre park in one of the most ambitious public works projects in the history of New York City. Freshkills Park combines state-of-the-art ecological restoration techniques and research on urban ecology with extraordinary settings for recreation, public art, education and scientific research.
Major Responsibilities
* Under general supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment perform responsible work in community programming and perform assigned tasks to provide necessary community and outreach services.
* Create, facilitate, and promote programs for the general public including educational activities, kayaking, photography, birding and group/public tours.
* Assist in administrative and organizational support for the Freshkills Park office and Freshkills Park Visitor Center.
* Collaborate with partner agencies, organizations and community groups.
* Assist in facility and park operations and interact with visitors.
* Assist in organizing and conducting public/special events at Freshkills Park including races, sporting events, arts events and festivals.
* Facilitate the development of content for blog posts/social media and other communications.
* Assist in scheduling outreach, school trips and specialty events.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
Preferred Skills
1. Highly organized with the ability to manage many details at once/multitask.
2. Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education, physical science, urban planning or environmental studies.
3. Experience in Public Programming.
4. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite Adobe Creative Suite experience a plus.
5. Ability to work a schedule that includes many evenings and weekends.
6. Valid New York State driver's license.

Residency Requirement
Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency is required within 90 days of hire for all other candidates.
