Job Summary
Provides public safety services through performance of functions, activities, and tasks not exclusively reserved for sworn peace officers in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the Georgia Southern University Division of Public Safety. Augments law enforcement, emergency management, and fire/life safety personnel through logistical, technical, and administrative field support. This position involves shift work based on the needs of Georgia Southern University and the Division of Public Safety.
Employees must have the ability to work flexible shift hours and schedules that include weekends, holidays, and evenings. Employees may be required to remain on duty beyond a normal shift and must be available to report for duty without prior notice due to on‑call status, special events, emergencies, or personnel shortages.
The position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. A CSA is obligated to report criminal incidents to the institution’s Clery Coordinator for publication in the Annual Security Report.
Responsibilities- Augment law enforcement, emergency management, and fire/life safety personnel through performance of non‑sworn public safety functions and tasks as assigned.
- Provide logistical, technical, and administrative support to sworn law enforcement personnel and other first responders.
- Perform duties as a basic communications officer when assigned to dispatch, including receiving, monitoring, and dispatching radio and telephone communications traffic for emergency and non‑emergency situations.
- Engage in visible safety/security patrol functions on foot and in vehicles to render service or aid, ensure the security of persons and property, and support the maintenance of public order.
- Respond to and document non‑enforcement calls for service, including general complaints, safety escorts, fire alarms, mislaid/recovered property, suspicious circumstances, injured person calls, and hazardous/unsafe conditions.
- Perform functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including directing traffic, administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging, and evacuating people from dangerous situations.
- Perform emergency safety equipment inspections and assist with fire drills.
- Fulfill annual professional development/training requirements as prescribed by the Georgia P.O.S.T. Council, Georgia Southern University, and the Division of Public Safety.
- Promote positive campus relations through delivery of public safety programming and active involvement in campus events.
Educational Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Required Experience:
- One (1) or more years of law enforcement, public safety, or related experience.
- Possession of Georgia P.O.S.T. Basic Communications Officer certification.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Three (3) or more years of law enforcement, public safety, or related experience.
$21.08 - $23.97 per hour
