Georgia Southern University is accepting applications for an Athletics Communications Graduate Assistant. Georgia Southern University, located in Statesboro, Georgia, is a member of the Sun Belt Conference, sponsors 17 NCAA sports and is a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision.
General DescriptionAssist in the publicity and promotion of Georgia Southern’s athletic programs, with an intense focus on brand building and comprehensive excellence. Work closely with local and national media in promoting GS Athletics while helping to execute the department’s digital and social strategy. Will report to the Director for Communications but will be mentored by the entire Athletics Communications staff in preparation for a successful, achievement-oriented career in athletic communications.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Primary responsibility is to serve as the primary media relations contact for softball or baseball, men’s soccer and a sport TBD
. - Serve as an inputter for several sports through NCAA Live Stats/Genius, including football, volleyball and basketball.
- Develop and execute multi-faceted promotional strategies for Georgia Southern athletic programs and/or individuals.
- Collaborate closely with media outlets to pitch and execute story ideas promoting teams, individual student-athletes, and staff members.
- Maintain statistical records, provide real-time data entry during live events and archive digital and physical records for historical reference.
- Ensure accurate and up-to-date information — including bios, rosters, schedules, statistics, previews and recaps — is published daily via and sport-specific social media platforms.
- Help manage media relations logistics associated with selected athletic events.
- Provide frequent written content to the website such as features and Q&As.
- Work in collaboration with the Creative Services team to best publicize Georgia Southern through written form, social media and video elements.
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum /Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required (preferred majors include journalism, public relations, communications, sports management, business administration or a related field of study).
- Candidates must demonstrate high-level knowledge of baseball and softball as an official scorer with a knowledge of statistical rules and regulations.
- Soccer knowledge, particularly the statistical elements of the sport is PREFERRED.
- Strong preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of inputting football, volleyball and basketball Genius programs.
- Strong writing and verbal communication skills.
- Certain technical knowledge may be required, including demonstrated experience with Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, SIDEARM, NCAA Live Stats/Genius, Stat Input, Presto and The Automated Scorebook (Stat Crew).
- Basic graphic editing skills.
- Basic working knowledge and familiarity with NCAA rules.
- Knowledge of college athletics content trends.
- Prior experience in NCAA media relations/communications office, professional sports franchise, or comparable work environment.
- Knowledge of current social and digital media trends and specifications.
- Ability to interpret and utilize brand standards.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Some evening and weekend hours required; travel also may be involved.
