Staunton City Schools, located in historic Staunton, Virginia in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, is seeking highly qualified applicants for Bookkeeper position at A.R. Ware Elementary School .

Hourly Rate is based on the 2026-27 Salary Scale.

Hiring Range
: $23.05/hour to $27.53/hour DOE/DOQ.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Bookkeeper

LOCATION: Schools

Principal

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY:

The Bookkeeper assists the principal by performing responsible clerical and technical work involving the preparation and maintenance of fiscal or related documents for the school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Maintains a complete bookkeeping system for the school.
  • Verifies, allocates, and posts details of financial transactions to subsidiary accounts in journals or computer files from documents such as sales slips, invoices, receipts, check stubs, and computer printouts.
  • Summarizes details in separate ledgers or computer files and transfers data to general ledger.
  • Compiles reports to show statistics such as cash receipts and expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, and other items pertinent to operation of the school.
  • Completes records to or through trial balance.
  • Prepares a financial summary report of all accounts.
  • Reconciles and balances accounts, including general ledger accounts and bank accounts.
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

Note:
Due to the bookkeeper’s specific job location and nature of responsibilities, additional secretarial functions/tasks may be required including the following:

  • Serves as a secretarial role to the administration;
  • Provides information; prepares correspondences and related matters; prepares and maintains files and records; assists teachers, parents and students;
  • Performs technical work in time keeping (KRONOS) as assigned;
  • Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information;
  • Registers new students/withdraws students;:
  • Serves as a receptionist, receives and greets persons or groups calling on building administrator(s); answers telephones, provides information, takes and dispatches messages;
  • Records daily attendance and calls from parents for absent students;
  • Maintains records of excessive student absences, tardies and unexcused absences;
  • Processes general correspondence, memorandum, reports, schedules, manuals, bulletins, agendas, and other materials from rough draft, copy, marginal notes, or verbal instruction;
  • Answers correspondence as directed by building administrator(s);
  • Maintains appointment calendar, schedules appointments, conferences, and meetings;
  • Maintains records and generates appropriate reports;
  • Receives, sorts and processes mail;
