Staunton City Schools, located in historic Staunton, Virginia, is seeking highly qualified applicants for a Special Education Teacher opening at Shelburne Middle School for the 2026-27 academic year.
Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited college or university. Must possess or be eligible to possess a professional license issued by VDOE with endorsement to teach special education in the general curriculum.

Position Description
- Job Title: Special Education Teacher
- Location: Shelburne Middle School
- Immediate Supervisor: Principal
- Grade/Rank: TB 10/11, TM10/11
- FLSA Status: Exempt
- Summary: The special education teacher performs complex professional work, providing teaching and/or training services to students in general or specialized instruction or in a specialized subject or assigned group of subjects; motivates students to develop skills in assigned subject matters; performs related work as required.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
- Instructs students in a program of study that meets stated objectives and prepares them to master grade‑level standards.
- Instructs students in citizenship, basic subject matter specified in state law, and administrative regulations and procedures of Staunton City Schools.
- Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division’s instructional philosophy and congruent with SOL standards; provides individualized and small‑group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize available time for instruction and actively engage students.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere by providing positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviors and modifying unacceptable behaviors.
- Develops and implements Individual Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with Federal and State law.
- Monitors student progress toward achieving instructional objectives and goals on IEPs.
- Serves as a liaison between classrooms and specialty groups.
- Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
- Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and maintains records including attendance reports, checklists, census forms and other record‑keeping activities as necessary.
- Communicates regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress.
- Supervises and monitors student movement and escorts students to resources, bathrooms, buses, cafeteria, room changes and other activities in the building.
- Administers standardized testing in accordance with division testing practices.
- Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
Other Duties:
- Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
- Participates in various student and parent activities that occur in school, including PTA, student clubs and after‑school activities.
