Job Duties

$7,500 sign-on bonus will be awarded to new hires to state service with a one-year written agreement required.

Bonus available for Registered Nurse II new to DBHDS or who have not worked for at least one year for DBHDS.

Schedule:

12-hour shift on a two-week rotating schedule. Work 36 hours one week and 48 hours the following week or vice versa. Available shifts: 7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m.

Competitive salaries: RN II starting pay from $79,572, increasing to commensurate with experience, education, and credentials. Total compensation (including paid time off and benefits) starts at $120,408.

Competitive Shift Differentials
  • 1st shift weekend: $5.50 per hour
  • 2nd shift weekday: $5.50 per hour; 2nd shift weekend/holidays: $6.00 per hour
  • 3rd shift weekday: $4.00 per hour; 3rd shift weekend/holidays: $7.00 per hour

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services supports individuals by promoting recovery, self-determination, and wellness in all aspects of life. DBHDS operates 12 facilities: eight behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation. State facilities provide highly structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, or need substance use disorder services.

About the Hospital

Western State Hospital may be just the place to practice your profession and contribute to health care. We are a 250-bed Joint Commission/CMS accredited hospital located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, within 30 minutes of major university towns. Our new wings are scheduled to open by the end of March, which will add 56 beds to our capacity.

The hospital is well regarded locally and across the state, has provided consultation or worked tours to seven other states regarding our Psychosocial Rehab “Learning” programs, effectively recruits and retains professional staff, and works actively within the hospital and with community partners to produce good clinical and quality of life outcomes for individuals.

Job Summary

DBHDS is seeking dedicated, experienced Registered Nurse professionals. A Registered Nurse II is responsible for providing advanced nursing care for patients with psychiatric disorders in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, as well as nursing standards and regulations. Registered nurses are also responsible for safely implementing seclusion/ restraints, including knowledge of physical/emotional risk factors of the patients served at the facility.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia/Compact licensure.
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program (BSN preferred).
  • Ability to delegate and supervise nursing staff. Effective communication (written, verbal, sign).
  • Ability to participate in interdisciplinary team. Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
