Overview

Western State Hospital is hiring a Registered Nurse II for our Admissions unit for the third shift. Join a supportive, mission‑driven team located in the heart of Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley.

Schedule

Every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Flexible shift options are available: (2) 12‑hour shifts and (2) 8‑hour shifts per week, or (5) 8‑hour shifts per week (includes every other weekend).

About the Role

As a Registered Nurse II, you will provide advanced, compassionate nursing care to individuals with psychiatric and co‑occurring disorders, follow hospital protocols and professional standards in a highly structured supportive setting, and participate actively in interdisciplinary treatment planning. You will also implement safe practices for seclusion/restraint use and promote recovery‑focused outcomes in a positive therapeutic environment.

Responsibilities
  • Provide advanced, compassionate nursing care to patients with psychiatric and co‑occurring disorders.
  • Follow hospital protocols and professional standards within a highly structured setting.
  • Participate actively in interdisciplinary treatment planning.
  • Implement safe practices for seclusion/restraint use, understanding each patient’s physical and emotional needs.
  • Promote recovery‑focused outcomes and a positive therapeutic environment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or Compact licensure).
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program (BSN preferred).
  • Ability to delegate and supervise nursing staff with effective communication written, verbal, and sign.
  • Ability to participate in an interdisciplinary team and assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Experience creating training material and maintaining a training program is preferred.
  • Prior experience as a Nurse Supervisor or training is preferred.
  • Familiarity with trauma‑informed, person‑centered, and relationship‑based nursing philosophy of care.
  • Ability to work overtime due to staffing emergencies in a 24‑hour, 7‑day‑per‑week psychiatric hospital, including 16‑hour shifts when necessary.
  • Complete all annual competency training, including TO III with physical restraints.
  • Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers with the American Heart Association.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of recovery/trauma‑informed care.
Additional Considerations
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution or higher education.
  • Veteran or Spouse of Veteran.
  • Bilingual – Spanish.

    • Starting Salary: RN II starts at $84,417, with additional compensation based on experience, education, and certifications.
