Salary: $25.00 to $29.00 per hour
Staunton City Schools’ Maintenance Department is seeking a Maintenance Worker to join its team in July 2026.

OverviewThe Maintenance Worker performs multi‑craft work to maintain and repair the physical structures of school buildings. The position may specialize in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, or HVAC. Pesticide certification and registered‑technician credentials are preferred.
Essential Functions / Typical Tasks- Installs, repairs, and maintains machinery, plumbing, electrical wiring, and fixtures in accordance with blueprints, manuals, building codes, and safety regulations.
- Inspects machinery and mechanical equipment for defects.
- Installs, repairs, and replaces plumbing equipment and opens clogged drains.
- Repairs or replaces electrical wiring and fixtures.
- Constructs and repairs partitions and wooden structures.
- Paints walls, floors, woodwork, and fixtures.
- Replaces and repairs brick and plaster walls.
- Operates welding equipment to join metal parts.
- Monitors, regulates, and inspects HVAC equipment; assists with boiler and maintenance inspections.
- Performs preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles and equipment such as chainsaws and mowers.
- Performs welds and cuts as needed.
- Maintains playground areas and assists with snow removal.
- Lubricates moving parts, replaces filters, cleans equipment, and performs routine preventive maintenance.
- Maintains a clean and safe work area and observes safe work practices.
- Uses safety equipment and attends training to develop and improve skills.
- Reports accidents or hazards to the Supervisor of Maintenance promptly.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Maintenance in accordance with policy.
Must be able to follow oral and written directions, establish effective working relations with co‑workers, supervisors, administrators, and community members, and be skilled in one or more trades.
Qualifications / Education & ExperienceAny combination of education and experience equivalent to high school completion is preferred; experience in maintenance is required. Pesticide certification is preferred.
Special RequirementsGood moral character; valid Virginia driver’s license; ability to obtain a commercial driver’s license within one year; meet criteria for SCS approved drivers’ list.
Physical Demands and Environmental ConditionsFrequent walking, standing, and lifting up to 50 lbs; occasional lifting of equipment up to 100 lbs. Work involves moving mechanical parts, exposure to electrical shock, hazardous substances, germs, and potential blood borne pathogens.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations for support staff personnel.
