Job Description
Perform special duties as assigned and maintain traffic signals in accordance with safety standards, VDOT policies, procedures, and operational standards.
How You Will Contribute- Communications:
Effectively communicate and provide customer service to VDOT employees, contractors, responders, and the public. - Maintenance of Traffic Signal:
Maintain a large number of traffic signals through ordinary maintenance, replacement, and preventive maintenance programs; conduct scheduled checks of major signal components using a laptop that communicates with the central system via a cabinet modem. - Preventative Maintenance:
Perform periodic preventive maintenance and inspections of electronic devices and related equipment for assigned program areas. - Signal Inspection:
Communicate with the public about operations and problems with traffic signals; coordinate with police regarding signal work and repairs. - Traffic Signal Repairs:
Respond to complaints and malfunctions, troubleshoot electronic traffic control devices using frequency meters, voltmeters, ohmmeters, soldering tools, and other hand tools; install signal controllers, program timings, troubleshoot 170‑control boxes, and use the MIST system to monitor signal systems. - Troubleshoot and Repair Electronic Devices:
Diagnose and repair electronic devices for assigned program areas.
- Effectively communicate technical information orally and in writing.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records.
- Plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple competing assignments.
- Apply knowledge of applicable federal, state, and department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.
- Promote good customer service to internal and external customers.
- Physical ability to perform hands‑on inspections of signals, components, and equipment; work at heights, in confined spaces, near moving traffic, and in inclement weather.
- Plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple competing assignments while keeping detailed and accurate records.
- Serve in an on‑call capacity and respond to emergency situations within a specified period.
- Use a variety of hand tools and testing equipment to perform maintenance on traffic signals.
- Knowledge of a variety of traffic control devices, signal equipment, and their operation.
- Knowledge of management systems including timing plans, graphic design, and computer use.
- Knowledge of traffic signal maintenance and operations.
- Provide and promote good customer service to internal and external customers.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Training, experience, or education in the electrical field or a related field is desirable.
- Commercial driver’s license.
- IMSA Roadway Lighting certification (desired).
- IMSA Traffic Signal Level I technician certification (desired).
- Perform physically demanding tasks related to traffic signal maintenance and repairs.
