Painter/Maintenance Worker-Part Time
Staunton City Schools is seeking a part-time painter/maintenance worker to join its team. The position involves skilled commercial painting and general maintenance work under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance or Facilities Coordinator. The employee typically works part-time (often up to 29 hours per week) and may be required to assist with division-wide projects and seasonal tasks.
The position works approximately 25-30 hours/week:
Monday through Friday. No benefits.
Hourly Rate: $20 to $25 DOE/DOQ.
This position is opened until filled.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Painting Duties
:
- Prepares surfaces for painting by scraping, sanding, wire‑brushing, spackling, patching plaster, caulking, and pressure washing.
- Mixes and matches paints, stains, and varnishes to specific color requirements.
- Applies protective and decorative coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
- Installs and repairs wallpaper and vinyl wall coverings.
- Erects and moves scaffolding, ladders, and mechanical lifts safely.
- Maintains painting equipment and ensures hazardous materials are safely stored and disposed of.
General Maintenance Duties
:
- Assists other maintenance personnel (carpenters, plumbers, electricians) on broader facility projects.
- Responds to work orders, tracks labor/materials, and prioritizes urgent maintenance requests.
- Performs minor facility repairs, such as fixing drywall, ceiling tiles, and minor carpentry.
- Assists with event set‑ups, furniture moving, and loading/unloading supplies.
- May assist with groundskeeping and snow removal during inclement weather.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education:
High school diploma or trade school certificate. - Experience:
Previous experience as a journey‑level or commercial painter, along with general facility maintenance experience. - Requirements:
Must possess a valid Virginia Driver's License and have a clean driving record. - Clearance:
Must pass a Virginia State Police background check and a Child Protective Services (CPS) registry check, as required by all VA school divisions.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Requires regular lifting and moving of heavy equipment (up to 50 pounds).
- Involves significant standing, bending, kneeling, and working from heights.
- Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, with occasional exposure to paint fumes, dust, and loud noises.
