The Assistant Vice President (AVP), Research Development works to cultivate extramurally funded research and research development programs that contribute to the institution’s mission, vision, and strategic plan; expand and expand Tarleton State University’s research portfolio; and ensure the development, growth, and effectiveness of the institution’s research enterprise. The AVP for Research Development reports directly to the VP-RIED. This position is an in-person position located at the main campus in Stephenville, TX.
Work hours being M-F 8AM – 5PM.
In cultivating extramurally-funded research, the AVP for Research Development identifies external funding sources aligned with institutional strategic goals, evaluates and aligns grant proposals with institutional needs, and leads an office that provides technical support to faculty, trainees, and students. The AVP works as a subject matter expert with faculty, staff, and external partners to develop proposals for external funding from public and private agencies, promoting research that fosters growth and enhances interdisciplinary collaboration, while advancing student learning and creative works at the University.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Establishes and monitors applicable metrics for all research databases
Develops business plans for new research initiatives.
Drives research funding initiatives, including faculty research development programs, to spur research activity.
Develops a strong understanding and database of faculty research interests and the alignment of these interests with signature and emerging programs.
Creates and delivers training workshops to help researchers successfully navigate the process of applying for grants.
Facilitates team science process to prepare large-scale, competitive multidisciplinary proposals. This includes leveraging collaborative opportunities with other universities and partners.
Develops and maintains proposal boilerplate language and develop a resource of successful proposal examples.
Manages internal grant and seed funding programs.
Develops tools for communicating funding opportunities, including limited submissions, and manage internal competitions.
Develops tools for finding funding and provide grant prospecting support.
Provides grant writing resources to researchers and faculty including ideas on discovering funding opportunities, grant writing, proposal editing, and development of templates.
Uncovers strategic federal and foundation funding opportunities and provides those to the appropriate deans, center directors, and researchers, in the schools.

Proven record of promoting research, research partnerships, and other related enhancements for the research enterprise
Skilled in analyzing a variety of data.

Ability to establish and cultivate effective relationships and teams with various levels of professionals.
Demonstrated communication skills that include excellent organizational, people skills, and strong verbal, and written communication skills.

Ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters appropriately.
Preferred Qualifications:
JD or Ph.D.
Progressively responsible experience providing leadership and development of research and sponsored programs in a higher education setting.
Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization
A minimum of five (5) years of related experience including 4 years of progressively responsible research administration experience in a higher education institution, government, or industry environment.
