GENERAL SUMMARY:

Shiawassee County is accepting applications for the position of Family Court Register/Assignment Clerk. Under the supervision of the Probate Court Administrator, this position is responsible for scheduling hearings, tracking and ensuring compliance with statutory time frames, generating subpoenas and notices, and creating and maintaining records for the Family Division of the Circuit Court. Responsibilities include tasks involving adoptions, juvenile delinquency, child protection, juvenile guardian ships, appeals, personal protection proceedings, and other miscellaneous matters.

Duties also include entering case information into the computer system, preparing case files for court action, and preparing and processing court orders and other documents.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Schedule juvenile delinquency cases. Enter cases into the JIS computer system, assign attorneys, and prepare case files.
  • Ensure petitions, orders, summonses, and other documents are prepared and noticed as required by statute.
  • Assist attorneys, prosecutors, and the public with inquiries regarding court procedures, scheduling, specific case information, reimbursement, and other matters.
  • Maintain the daily docket and distribute it to the appropriate parties.
  • Monitor all cases on the docket to ensure compliance with statutory time frames.
  • Enter case information into the computer system, including petition information, parties, event information, hearing notices, and other documentation.
  • Accept payments from individuals, apply payments to the correct account, and enter the information into the computer system.
  • Respond to telephone calls and in-person inquiries from attorneys, governmental agencies, and the public regarding court schedules, procedures, and related matters.
  • Ensure petitions, orders, summonses, and other documents are prepared and noticed as required by statute. Review all legal documents pertaining to family court matters for accuracy.
  • Serve as a backup court recorder for Probate and Family Court.
  • Serve as a backup for the other Family Court Registers, performing their functions in their absence.
