Job Description

Job Description: The Supervisor of Student Support and Special Services ensures that programming and support meets the needs of UCS students requiring support under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). This is a 44 week position.

Utica Community Schools is seeking to fill multiple positions for the role of Supervisor of Student Support and Special Services.

Reports to: Director of Student Support and Special Services

Responsibilities
  • Ensure excellence, equity, and access for all students.
  • As an instructional leader, advocate for and ensure that access to educational programming is provided to all students with disabilities.
  • Ensure positive academic and behavioral outcomes for all Special Education students.
  • Provide administrative support for the implementation of appropriate Special Education programs and services in assigned buildings.
  • Serve as immediate supervisor for assigned itinerant staff and conduct non-tenure performance evaluations.
  • Provide specific program supervision for assigned Special Education categorical programs.
  • Conduct ongoing monitoring of Special Education programs and services to ensure compliance with IDEA and Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education.
  • Collaborate with the Student Support and Special Services team to support programming for students with disabilities from birth – 26 years of age.
  • Maintain regular contact with and provide consultation to building principals concerning the on-site management of Special Education programs and services.
  • As needed or requested, assist building principals with Special Education teacher evaluations and staff supervision.
  • Make recommendations regarding staffing needs to the Director of Student Support Services.
  • As needed, advise and assist principals concerning the Special Education referral, evaluation, and placement process, including facilitating IEPT meetings.
  • Work with building principals and Special Education personnel to ensure the accuracy and proper maintenance of student records.
  • Coordinate and facilitate all placements of students with IEPs into and out of their home school buildings including any needed transportation.
  • Coordinate all referrals for student placements into and out of county center programs for assigned programs and buildings.
  • Process parent requests for Special Education evaluations.
  • Support the Director of Student Support and Special Services with monitoring of student 504 plans.
  • Recommend supplies, materials and professional development requests for Special Education personnel to the Director of Student Support and Special Services
  • Assist with the planning and development of facilities used for Special Education.
  • Support the Director of Student Support and Special Services with planning, facilitating and evaluation of professional development for staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Valid administrative certificate.
  • A Master's Degree or higher required.
  • Full approval in at least one area of special education.
  • Three years of successful experience in special education.
  • Ability to meet the requirements for Full or Temporary approval as a Special Education Supervisor as required by Rule 340.1772.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, staff, administration, parents, community and Board of Education.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with various employee groups.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Understanding of technology and its application to the operational functions of a public school district.
  • Strong organizational skills, with outstanding attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated successful administrative, supervisory or managerial experience.
