Tooling Engineer – Machining Launch (Contract)
Location: Sterling Heights, MI (Onsite)
Pay Rate: $46.06/hr
We are seeking a Tooling Engineer to support a high-impact machining launch program within a major automotive manufacturing environment. This role partners closely with headquarters launch teams and suppliers to ensure successful delivery of a new machining line aligned with quality, safety, cost, and delivery targets.
Key Responsibilities- Support machining processes through tooling development and optimization
- Assist with implementation of GTSV tool tracking systems and tooling standards
- Identify tool-critical and dominant features; establish robust process controls
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives in safety, quality, and productivity
- Complete PPAP documentation and support full launch quality requirements
- Apply engineering principles to improve manufacturing processes and product performance
- Develop action plans to resolve internal and supplier process issues
- Lead process audits aligned with Powertrain and corporate standards
- Create work instructions and process documentation supporting quality systems
- Support gear machining operations with capable tooling and process design
- Lead lean manufacturing and variability reduction initiatives
- Ensure compliance with ISO 14001, environmental, and plant standards
- 5+ years of manufacturing/tooling or machining engineering experience
- Strong background in tooling design, CNC machining, and problem solving
- Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
- Experience with gear machining, blade grinding, CNC mills
- Familiarity with Zoller or Royal tool presetters
- Experience with FMEA, PPAP, DOE, Lean Manufacturing, and Six Sigma
- Strong communication and leadership in cross-functional environments
