Job Description

The Plan Review Engineer is responsible for reviewing construction plans, engineering calculations and related documents to ensure compliance with applicable building codes, structural design standards and engineering principles, and municipal standards. This role involves collaborating with architects, engineers, contractors, and city officials to facilitate safe and code-compliant project approvals.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction, or a related field.
  • 2-5 years experience as a building design engineer and/or as a plan check engineer.
  • Possession of Building Plans Examiner International Code Council (ICC) certification, Certified Access Specialist program (CASp) certification, Division of the State Architect (DSA) certification, and/or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of plan check review; methods and materials used in building construction; some knowledge of state and local laws, codes and regulations; design and analysis of buildings and other structures built or rehabilitated to resist vertical and horizontal loads of a static and dynamic nature; scientific and mathematical principles.
Responsibilities
  • Perform structural and architectural plan checking of residential, commercial, industrial, and multi-family projects of medium complexity for compliance with Building Codes and structural engineering principles. Evaluate test reports and may occasionally perform structural inspections in the field for special projects.
  • Learn and apply the State of California’s Building Standards and local codes; read and interpret structural plans for compliance with state and local building and safety codes and ordinances; determine occupancy classifications, building exiting and fire resistance requirements; respond to requests from the general public; communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, planning staff, contractors, developers, architects, property owners, and the public.
