Position

As part of our evolving needs and in response to rapid growth, we currently have an opening for Machine Operator I – Grinding at Unisteel in Sterling Heights, MI.

Purpose

The Machine Operator I position is responsible for performing various tasks to set up and operate assigned machines; operating manual, semi‑automatic and automatic equipment according to established procedures and processes to accurately finish material (steel or aluminum stock) to customer specifications; ensuring quality via post‑finish quality checks. Job complexity ranges from simple, highly repetitive tasks to repetitive but challenging tasks, congruent with the incumbent’s experience.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Set up, adjust, and operate Blanchard‑style rotary surface grinders, often involving magnetic chucks and vertical spindles, to grind flat surfaces.
  • Calibrate appropriately to complete accurate layout and centering of material per customer drawing or blueprint.
  • Load and unload material with the aid of a forklift, magnets, chains, slings, or an overhead crane, positioning material as required.
  • Complete paperwork and input information into the computer system, updating inventory.
  • Set controls for speed and feed rate; ensure that the metal is shaped or finished properly, adjusting the speed of the machine during shaping if needed.
  • Set up and operate manual and numerical controlled (CNC) machines, including various styles of lathes; maintain necessary lubricant and coolant concentration, cleaning or replacing coolant as required.
  • Observe chip output characteristics in determining carbide replacement, making appropriate adjustments.
  • Inspect the quality of the material during and after the procedure being performed.
  • Use measuring instruments as necessary, including tape measures, profilometers, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Check identification on all material handled by stamping or marking with necessary numbers when required.
  • Deliver material to the next area of operation as required.
  • Complete required production reports, using the computer system as required.
  • Report defective material and faulty equipment to the Operations Manager or Maintenance Department immediately.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and abide by all plant safety regulations and work rules; perform safety inspections on cranes, chains, slings, and magnets.
  • Perform in the role of Saw/Flow Operator I, II, III as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
  • Shop environment that offers protection from outside environmental conditions; subject to changes in temperature (hot and cold) and humidity; frequently exposed to moderate noise, fumes, odors, dust, and dirt.
  • Primarily standing or walking, performing medium to heavy work, exerting up to 50+ lbs of force regularly and/or up to 100 lbs occasionally (with assistance) to move objects; using both non‑powered and hand power tools.
  • Exposed to moving objects with risk of electric shock; occasionally exposed to vibration.
  • Frequent fine manual dexterity and multi‑limb coordination including handling, pinching, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, turning, and bending.
  • Assigned duties according to specified procedures; work is checked frequently.
