SUMMARY

Plans and performs a number of operations connected with assembly and erection of a variety of special subassemblies and complete machines involving a considerable number of details requiring a high degree of skill and accuracy to maintain close tolerances in alignment, fit, and clearance to meet exacting operating specifications of special machinery.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan erection procedure.
  • Build up sub-assemblies on floor or bench.
  • Fit, adjust, and align parts as necessary.
  • Erect completed standard or special machine on floor, assemble sub-assemblies previously assembled by self or others, and various other parts, fit, adjust, and perform preliminary alignment with assistance of the assembler group personnel or contractors.
  • Perform various hand or simple power machine operations such as drilling, tapping, reaming, filing, scraping, etc., as required.
  • Perform final test operations on machine following specifications presented by others.
  • Operate machine to produce sample parts inspected after each operation and completion of part.
  • Suggest changes in design or construction to facilitate assembly procedure or to increase machine efficiency.
  • Disassemble completed machines for shipping, properly identifying all parts to facilitate erection at customer's facility.
  • Report unusual conditions or engineering errors to the leader or supervisor.
  • May assist in training apprentices.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Adhere to quality, customs, foreign trade zone and environmental processes and procedures.
  • Share ideas about process improvements and other cost saving measures with management.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Skilled trade certification as Toolmaker/Machine Builder or comparable trade; or comparable work experience in the metal cutting machine tools industry.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Good working knowledge of machine shop tools, concepts, and practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • May be required to travel.
  • May be required to work at customer sites.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Regularly required to stand and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; climb or balance; talk and hear.
  • Occasionally required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision to read measuring instruments and set gages.
  • Color vision required to properly set feeds and speeds.
  • Peripheral vision required for safety purposes, and depth perception needed to set tooling on the machine and to focus adjustments for the tool setting.

  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock.
  • Occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and outside weather conditions.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can become very loud.
