Position: DPS Supervisor 2 (077700)

Purpose/Description

DPS Supervisors 2 in the Structures (Bridges) Section of the Roads Maintenance Division supervise both skilled and unskilled employees in the repair and maintenance of bridges and other structures. This employee supervises employees who perform a variety of skilled tasks, which include the repair and maintenance of concrete, steel and wooden bridges and moveable bridges, installing and maintaining pumps, construction of pump foundations, repairing pump houses, replacing heavy shaft bearing and machinery on movable bridges and repairing and maintaining gates, oversight of false decking placements and repairs, temporary support placement and removal, and attenuator repairs and maintenance on county and state structures.

  • Required Knowledge
    • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of structures such as bridges, highways and roads.
    • Mechanical
    • Knowledge of arithmetic and applications.
    • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
    • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
    • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
    • Administration and Management
    • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Required Tasks
    • Directs, participate and supervise Electrical Sub Foreperson, Electricians and other employees in the installation and repair of electrical wiring systems on pump houses, bridges and other structures.
    • Periodically working as an Electrician;
    • Preparing field time and writing reports.
    • Assist Electrician Sub Foreperson with paperwork, daily work assignments, planning, attend meetings.
    • Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes.
    • Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.
    • Test electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using testing devices, such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
    • Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes.
    • Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, or components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
    • Advise management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.
    • Travel to various locations may be required.
    • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Educational Requirements
    • High school diploma or its equivalent; AND
    • A valid Journeyman's or Master's Electrical license from the State of Michigan; AND
    • The ability to obtain airport credentials.
  • Experience Requirements
    • Regular status in the class of Electrician or electrician Supervisor 1, AND
    • at least two (2) years within the last five (5) years’ experience as an Electrician in the Bridges/Structures Maintenance Section of the Roads Division AND
    • a valid state of Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an "A" and "N" designation (including air brakes test) AND
    • an acceptable driving record
