Job SummaryThis position is a Licensed Boiler Operator Lieutenant (Correctional Support Licensed Trades Supervisor II) for the Colorado Department of Corrections, responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the facility, supervising staff and offender workers, and managing the operations of the Central Plant and related emergency services.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain safety and security of the facility and work sites, including training staff and offenders in equipment use, reporting procedures, and control of keys, tools, and chemicals.
- Perform inmate counts, shakedowns, searches, and escort operations, ensuring compliance with regulations and correct application of restraints.
- Supervise assigned staff and offender workers, setting performance standards and providing instruction on tools, equipment, and procedures.
- Assist in hiring, interviewing, and recommending staff, coaching and mentoring to ensure training, teamwork, and resolution of problems.
- Participate in offender classification and hiring, track and calculate offender hours, assign tasks, and perform evaluations to prepare offenders for community re‑entry.
- Ensure safe, efficient, and cost‑effective operation of the Central Plant, Emergency Generation Plants, HVAC, plumbing, and peripheral systems, including project planning, supply ordering, and coordination with other trades.
- Work outside normal hours as required for safety, security, or emergent conditions, including confined and outdoor environments.
- Active Stationary Engineer License (a copy must be submitted with the application)
- Five (5) years of employment experience performing predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on high and low pressure steam generation and distribution systems, with at least one year of supervisory responsibilities (scheduling, task assignment, time tracking).
- Strong work ethic, integrity, and dependability

- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict‑resolution skills, and ability to motivate co‑workers and inmates to work cooperatively
- Proficiency in boiler plant operations and maintenance of peripheral systems
- Ability to troubleshoot and ensure uninterrupted service in a high‑stress, security‑driven environment
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines for compliant operations
- Strong desire to work cohesively as a team, maintain a safe environment, and respond to emergencies
- Ability to prepare inmates for successful community re‑entry
- Attention to detail and efficient use of state resources
- Intermediate keyboarding skills, computer literacy, and email communication
- Self‑control, emotional stability, and resilience under pressure
- Ability to read and comprehend English; effective written and verbal communication in English
- Ability to create accessible documents and technical content following plain‑language guidelines
- Must be 21 years of age
- Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record; must be able to operate a State‑owned vehicle under state policies
