CDOC Boiler Plant Operator CSTS I (Sterling)

Join the State of Colorado’s dedicated team to support public confidence in effective government. Customer service is key to every state government position, and this role focuses on redesigning service delivery for greater efficiency.

Responsibilities
  • Safety and Security – Maintain a safe, secure facility and work sites. Train and guide inmates in the proper use of tools, equipment, chemicals and security procedures. Conduct workplace searches, monitor inmate behavior and respond to emergencies.
  • Operations – Ensure safe, efficient, compliant and cost‑effective boiler house operations. Conduct regular checks, read gauges, maintain water heaters, air handlers, heat‑exchangers and steam traps. Perform preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance.
  • Supervision – Provide inmate supervision, training and instruction. Create schedules, assign work, conduct job evaluations and monitor hours.
  • Compliance/Budget – Adhere to the Colorado Boiler Code, International Mechanical Code, American Correctional Association and all applicable regulations. Track tool, equipment and part usage, expenses and waste to remain within budget.
  • Work additional hours or shifts and maintain security in a loud, industrial environment.
Qualifications
  • Four (4) years of experience as a utility plant or boiler operator performing preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance on steam or hydronic hot water boilers and associated pumps, motors and plumbing.
  • OR Four (4) years of experience installing, repairing, and maintaining HVAC systems that include hot water boilers or steam boilers above 15 psi.
  • OR A minimum of two (2) years of experience as described above combined with additional plumbing, pipe‑fitting or HVAC experience to total four (4) or more years.
  • Security experience with detaining, controlling movement, escorting inmates, conducting counts and searches.
  • Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or degree that demonstrates comparable competencies.
  • Strong work ethic, integrity and dependability.
  • Sound judgment, decision making and effective communication skills.
  • Proficiency in boiler plant operations, and maintenance of peripheral systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, maintain uninterrupted service in a high‑stress, security‑driven environment.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Ability to supervise inmates and prepare them for community re‑entry.
  • Willingness to maintain a safe, secure work environment and respond to emergencies.
  • Intermediate keyboarding skills, computer‐based program manipulation and email communication.
  • Self‑control, emotional stability and resilience under pressure.
  • Ability to read, understand and communicate fluently in English.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Stationary Engineer Certification
  • Boiler Operator Certification
  • Experience providing supervisory or work‑lead duties that influence pay, status or tenure of subordinates.
