Role Summary

Canine Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I). This position ensures the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates, and prepares inmates for community re‑entry by promoting the Department’s Mission, Vision and Values while adhering to a high level of integrity and commitment.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Deliver the program to adult inmates and contribute to the safety and security of the facility through effective inmate management.
  • Oversee instruction of inmate workers involved in canine behavior modification training program and ensure the use of proper training methods.
  • Interact with housing staff to resolve issues hampering the functioning of the program at the facility.
  • Ensure existence and maintenance of all appropriate records both current and historical.
  • Provide essential commercial/professional knowledge of the canine industry for the purpose of canine behavior modification training and transportation of dogs.
  • Supervise veterinary care, instruction of health care, maintenance of dog and veterinary records.
  • Locate and acquire prospective dogs suitable for companion, assistance, detection, search and rescue, therapy or any other specialty work currently offered or requested in the program.
  • Market trained dogs to consumers.
  • Implement preventative maintenance programs for the canine operation.
  • Schedule work assignments and coordinate training schedules, supervision of offenders.
  • Maintain proper tool control procedures.
  • Enforce DOC Administrative Regulations, Code of Penal Discipline (COPD), Operational Memoranda, Post Orders and comply with American Correctional Association (ACA) standards.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the public, facility staff and offenders by evaluating work conditions; instructing staff and offenders in proper safety methods.
  • Provide custody, surveillance, supervisory, transport, shakedown and count duties; ensure proper key, tool, equipment and chemical control; enforce safety/security procedures by conducting inspections, work site searches and monitoring the work environment.
Minimum Qualifications

Four (4) years of work experience in commercial/professional experience in the canine industry, including behavior modification training, canine management and nutrition, and canine health care.

OR a minimum of two (2) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with (2) years of correctional experience that includes monitoring and controlling inmate movement, preventing contraband, responding to emergencies, key/tool/chemical/equipment control, and advising inmates in matters concerning work, programs, appropriate behavior and decision making to prepare them for successful community re‑entry.
