Job OverviewThe Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) is a General Maintenance Supervisor for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) at the Sterling Correctional Facility. The role ensures the safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates while training and overseeing an inmate work crew in general building trades, grounds maintenance, and janitorial operations. The position promotes the CDOC Mission and Vision with integrity and commitment.
Responsibilities- Safety and Security: Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites; train inmates on proper use of tools, equipment, and chemicals; enforce security procedures; conduct searches and monitoring; control inmate behavior; respond to emergencies; write and submit required reporting.
- Operations: Ensure safe, efficient, compliant, and cost‑effective operations of building and grounds construction, janitorial operations, repair or maintenance.
- Building Maintenance: Oversee maintenance of facility buildings including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, remodeling, and repairs; instruct inmates in construction and renovation of various materials.
- Grounds Maintenance: Maintain facility grounds including irrigation, sprinkler systems, pipelines, gates, snow removal, and general landscaping.
- Inventory and Resource Management: Coordinate with other supervisors and managers; maintain adequate inventory; monitor levels and implement efficient use procedures.
- Supervision and Scheduling: Provide supervision of inmate work crews; set performance standards; train staff and inmates; create schedule, assign tasks, resolve grievances; inspect work and evaluate inmates; reduce idle time and build real‑life job opportunities.
- Additional Requirements: Facility call‑back, working additional hours or shifts, working outside during inclement weather, operating close to industrial equipment, and working high or confined spaces.
- Four (4) years of employment experience in building/equipment maintenance or a combination of building and grounds maintenance.
- Building/Equipment Maintenance experience: planning, estimating and performing a variety of hands‑on trades such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, machinery/equipment repair, and/or electrical on residential, commercial or agricultural structures.
- Grounds Maintenance experience: planning, installation and maintenance of automated irrigation systems, comprehensive lawn care, and a variety of exterior work such as concrete, asphalt patching, fence building and snow removal.
- Alternatively, 2 (2) years of building/grounds maintenance combined with correctional experience in security duties such as detaining, controlling movement, escorting inmates, counts and searches.
- Substitutions possible through a formal apprenticeship program or a degree from a non‑correspondence vocational or trade school on a 1:1 year‑to‑year basis; transcripts may be required.
