Position SummaryCorrectional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) position is a General Maintenance Electrician Supervisor for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) at the Sterling Correctional Facility.
Primary Responsibilities- Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites; train and guide inmates in all aspects of electrical operations, safe use of controlled items, tools, equipment, and chemicals.
- Enforce security procedures, conduct work site searches, monitor workplace environment and inmate behavior, and initiate verbal reprimands or physical control when warranted.
- Perform inmate counts and transportation; respond to emergency situations such as fights, fires, and escapes according to policy and submit required reporting.
- Ensure the safe, secure, efficient, compliant, and cost‑effective execution of assigned tasks and projects, performing hands‑on instructional work alongside inmate crews.
- Maintain facility electrical systems and electronic devices; troubleshoot and repair electrical devices based on information received from staff.
- Coordinate with other projects, supervisors, and managers to facilitate economical use of resources and assist other physical plant staff as assigned.
- Maintain adequate inventory of supplies and materials, monitor inventory levels, and implement procedures for efficient use and elimination of theft, waste, and loss.
- Provide supervision of assigned inmate work crew; set work standards, train and instruct staff and inmates in use of tools, equipment, procedures, and personal protective equipment.
- Participate in inmate hiring process; track and calculate inmate hours and pay; create schedules and assign tasks; resolve informal grievances; inspect work and perform inmate evaluations.
- Maintain awareness of safety and security protocols, including the use of restraints or “use of force” techniques, and the ability to respond to emergency situations.
- Obtain a Journeyman Electrician License or Master Electrician License with the State of Colorado within one (1) year of hire.
- Four (4) years of employment experience in building/equipment maintenance or a combination of building and grounds maintenance, with at least two (2) years including electrical work experience in residential and/or commercial buildings.
- Combination of electrical employment experience with correctional experience: a minimum of two (2) years of electrical employment may be combined with correctional experience.
- Correctional experience must involve security‑related duties with primary responsibilities including detaining, controlling movement, escorting inmates, conducting counts and searches, and monitoring inmate assignments and movement throughout the day.
- Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or degree through an accredited vocational or trade school that demonstrates competencies equivalent to the required experience may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis.
