Overview
Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor (Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I) at the Sterling Correctional Complex, Colorado Department of Corrections. Responsible for ensuring safe operation and maintenance of fleet vehicles, supervising inmate workers, and performing metal fabrication and welding tasks.
Responsibilities- Maintain the safety and security of facility and work sites through clear communication and training of staff and inmates.
- Supervise assigned staff and inmate workers, setting work standards and providing coaching and mentoring.
- Operate state‑owned garage and oversee the facility fleet, including passenger cars, pickup trucks, heavy duty trucks, and heavy construction equipment.
- Diagnose, repair, and complete all regularly scheduled manufacturer‑recommended maintenance (oil changes, tire rotation, fueling, major system repairs, welding, metal fabrication).
- Track mileage and fuel usage, maintain records for State Fleet Management.
- Assist other general maintenance trades with building construction projects throughout the complex.
- Manage tool room according to AR 300‑09, maintain inventory, and issue tools.
- Ensure compliance with agency regulations, operational memoranda, and Code of Penal Discipline.
- Four (4) years of employment experience performing duties in automotive mechanical repair, welding (metal fabrication), and/or heavy construction equipment repair; at least two (2) years of heavy construction equipment/automotive repair.
- Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – obtain within two (2) years of employment.
- ASE Certification – obtain within two (2) years of employment.
- Self‑motivation, tactful and diplomatic interpersonal skills, exceptional discernment and decision‑making skills.
- Excellent communication skills; ability to read and comprehend the English language and effectively communicate in writing and orally.
- Determination to pay special attention to detail and follow instruction.
- Proficiency in vehicle maintenance and general building maintenance duties.
- Ability to fabricate metal and perform welding repairs.
- Ability to plan and implement projects from start to finish, read blueprints.
- Ability to work with inmates through daily supervision and instruction, apply security procedures, respond to emergency situations.
- Physical ability to climb stairs and ladders, work in high, tight, and confined spaces, and maintain alertness under pressure.
- Related State of Colorado work experience.
- Proficiency in welding and metal fabrication.
- Proficiency in other construction building trades.
- Heavy Construction Equipment Operator experience.
