Job Summary

The Electrical Substation Designer II is responsible for the technical execution of substation drawing packages, including equipment layouts, protection and control schematics, and civil/structural details. Working under the guidance of a Project Manager, Engineers, and Lead Designer, this role focuses on translating engineering logic into high‑quality, intelligent deliverables.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with clients, architects, and other discipline engineers to complete drawing packages.
  • Produce single‑line, relay protection diagrams, 3‑wire design/drawings, cable schedules, distribution‑gear up, and low‑voltage panel board schedules with moderate supervision.
  • Apply Rosendin standards for wire sizing, bus feeds, and protection, and perform feeder sizing and ratings for major substation equipment.
  • Coordinate with architectural, structural, and mechanical trades to complete the substation drawings.
  • With the guidance of engineers, create details to define installation for construction.
  • Familiarize with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and IEEE standards and use them as references.
  • Attend project design team meetings and interface with the client and other disciplines.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of intelligent CAD libraries (AutoCAD Electrical/SDS).
  • Back‑check own work and the work of other designers to ensure accuracy and completeness before passing on to others.
  • Maintain a growth mindset toward new software automation and skills.
  • Participate in site visits for field verification or project closeout as required.
  • Follow safety protocols and PPO requirements during onsite visits.
  • Coordinate with others, navigating technical disagreements with professional curiosity and a solution‑oriented mindset.
  • Leverage AI tools to enhance design efficiency and workflow automation.
Qualifications
  • Ability to understand how a single change in a schematic ripples through the entire package.
  • Ownership over the accuracy of deliverables.
  • Translate complex engineering requirements into clear drawing documentation and instructions.
  • Drive for consistency in CAD standards to ensure professional, high‑quality output.
  • Postsecondary non‑degree award or certification in engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a designer with knowledge of electrical symbols, layout schematic logic of substations.
  • Proficiency in 2D & 3D modeling including AutoCAD Electrical, REVIT, and Inventor.
  • Knowledge of Substation Design Suite (SDS) for both Protection & Control (AutoCAD Electrical) and Physical Design (Inventor/Revit).
  • Understanding of automated, intelligent design workflows and contribution to standardized systems.
  • Fundamental knowledge of IEEE, NESC, NEC codes.
  • Understanding of Protection & Control (P&C) logic.
  • Familiarity with PDM software, Vault, Project Wise, Adept.
  • Experience in a structured Engineering Document Management System (EDMS) and preference for standardized design environments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, projects, and changing priorities.
  • Work under time pressure and adapt to changing requirements with a positive attitude.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Self‑motivated, proactive, and an effective team player.
  • Professional interaction with all levels of employees, management, staff, vendors, clients, and others.
Travel
  • Up to 10% (does not include local field visits).
Working Conditions
  • General work environment—sitting for long periods, standing, walking, typing, carrying, pushing, bending; primarily indoors with fluorescent lighting and air conditioning.
  • Noise level usually low to medium; can be loud on the job site.
