The Field Technician position involves performing OTDR testing, cleaning, and repairing fiber cables in data centers, along with managing trouble tickets and supporting network outages.
Job Description:Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) testing on fiber optic cable within the data center environment and interpret test results
- Check optical Power levels using a Power meter test set
- Generate test result reports with OTDR, fiber microscopes, or power meters.
- Connect fiber optic jumpers between patch panel locations according to basic circuit design drawings
- Routinely use tools such as click sticks, solvents, and lint free cloths to clean fiber jumpers and patch panel ports and use fiber optic microscopes to verify cleanliness
- Promptly respond to dispatch tickets from the Network Operations Center (NOC)
- Document trouble tickets accurately and in a timely fashion
- Work with customer technicians and data center technicians to troubleshoot and correct physical layer problems with fiber optic circuits
- Operate company vehicles, tools, and equipment safely and responsibly
- Support emergency restoration efforts and network outage response activities as needed
- Work outside of normal business hours when needed
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel throughout assigned market in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to read road maps and basic circuit design drawings.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, and mobile technology applications.
- Experience using OTDR test sets, power meters, fiber microscopes, visible light sources, and traffic identifiers
- Experience conducting circuit testing practices that reduce accidental circuit outages.
- Familiarity with data center rack layout, labeling references, and security protocols
- Experience directing repair efforts in a conference call setting among multiple technicians
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
- Ability to safely operate vehicles and field equipment.
