Job Description - General Transp Tech I/II (roadway maintenance) - Sterling City (2502467)
General Transportation Tech I or II (highway maintenance worker) in Sterling and Glasscock counties. The role maintains 715 miles of US and State highways, and farm to market roads. The team performs sign replacement, herbicide application, roadway level-up, seal coat, edge repair, tree trimming, litter pick-up, project inspection, vehicle maintenance and more. We offer company sponsored CDL training with no upfront monetary commitment and lodging, transportation and per-diem provided if necessary.

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Job Shift Details

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and assisting the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees follow standard practices with limited supervision.
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
- Moves/picks up litter and roadway debris.
- Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work during emergencies (floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, hazardous material spills).
- Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures per plans and specifications.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional duties for General Transportation Tech II include:
- Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
- Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement for compliance with specifications, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader with 1.5 cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
- Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures to ensure Department specifications.
Experience
: GTT I = No experience required; GTT II = 1 year experience*
* Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work. Related technical training or education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
