Job SummaryElectrical Controls Engineer will design, implement, and maintain control systems for paper mill operations to ensure optimal efficiency, quality, and safety. The role focuses on automation, instrumentation, and process optimization across paper machine and converting operations.
Responsibilities- Keep environmental and employee safety top‑of‑mind in the completion of all tasks.
- Configure and maintain PLC and HMI systems for paper mill processes.
- Develop and update control logic for stock preparation, paper machines, and converting lines.
- Install, calibrate, and troubleshoot sensors, actuators, and process instruments (e.g., flow, pressure, temperature, level).
- Provide engineering support to maximize asset TPD, yield, uptime, and COM targets.
- Analyze production data to improve machine efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality.
- Implement advanced control strategies for consistency control, basis weight, moisture, and tension.
- Provide technical support during equipment failures and process upsets.
- Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to resolve control‑related issues.
- Maintain accurate documentation of control systems and modifications.
- Develop and execute capital projects to support strategic initiatives, reduce costs, and sustain and improve operations from a safety, reliability and environmental standpoint.
- Abide by safety guidelines, mandates, regulations, and laws.
- Manage third‑party engineering as needed to expedite project initiatives.
- Assist in development and management of the 5‑year capital plan for the Whiting facility.
- Plan and execute annual mill shutdowns so activities are impactful and remain in budget.
- Support the development of technical skills of Electrical and Instrumentation team members.
- Support the development of technical skills of others in the Engineering group.
- Incorporate energy and cost effectiveness into the design of all equipment additions and modifications.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- Proficiency in PLC/DCS programming (Rockwell/Allen‑Bradley Control Logix).
- Proficiency with Rockwell/Allen‑Bradley Power Flex AC and DC drives.
- Proficiency with Rockwell/Allen‑Bradley Factory Talk View Studio and Panel View Plus hardware.
- Knowledge of industrial networking and control system cybersecurity.
- Must be able to wear required PPE and travel through the facility to perform tasks in hot and humid areas; may require climbing stairs or ladders.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Automation, or Engineering field.
- Experience in pulp and paper manufacturing, including familiarity with paper mill processes and quality control systems.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical.
- Oracle knowledge.
- Preferred
Certifications:
ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) or similar.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain concepts to a varied audience.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
