The company offers locating and inspection expertise beyond traditional paint and flag services, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It has expanded into sewer imaging and inspection, performing utility project services across the United States. Northern Lights focuses on allowing locators to run their area independently while providing a supportive system.

Responsibilities
  • Locate underground utilities for clients and property owners based on 811 tickets and 811 dig laws
  • Use utility maps, as‑built civil engineering drawings, GIS information, and various pipe and electronic locating equipment
  • Utilize flags and/or paint to mark the location of underground utilities
  • Prepare reports, forms, and memos to document work completed and problems encountered or resolved
  • Take pictures of utility lines located for each 811 ticket
  • Investigate and document excavations that result in damage to underground utilities
  • Record locating marks using the company’s cell‑phone‑based app, which holds photos and completes required documentation
  • Participate in on‑call rotation
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of locator experience
  • Knowledge of best locating practices, procedures, and 811 law
  • Ability to read and interpret utility maps and as‑built civil engineering drawings
  • Maintain cleanliness and good operating condition of all equipment and vehicle
  • Maintain a tobacco‑free vehicle
  • Use multiple methods of locating underground utilities
  • Follow written and oral instructions
  • Maintain small‑ to medium‑sized equipment and trucks
  • Complete paperwork and documentation accurately
  • Use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, and excavators
  • Attention to detail
  • Work in all weather conditions
  • Willingness to travel (75%+) and work varying schedules and overtime
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills
  • Pass a drug screen and obtain a DOT physical certification
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality
