Classical Humanities Teacher (Elective Seminar Leader) - St. Croix Preparatory Academy
Position is part-time, .60 FTE starting August 10, 2026
School Overview
As a top-rated, classically based charter school, we are dedicated to providing a rigorous liberal arts education that fosters intellectual virtue, moral character, and civic responsibility. We believe that true education goes beyond vocational preparation; it trains students to love what is good, true, and beautiful. Through the study of the Great Books, primary source historical documents, and Socratic discourse, we prepare our Upper School students to be thoughtful, articulate leaders.
Job Summary
We are seeking an intellectually vibrant and student-centered educator to join our faculty as a Part-Time (0.6 FTE) Classical Humanities Teacher.
This specialized role focuses entirely on leading upper-level elective courses. Rather than traditional lecture-based instruction, our electives utilize the Socratic seminar method to deeply explore classical literature, ancient and modern history, and the foundational texts of Western Civilization. The ideal candidate is a dynamic teacher who thrives on facilitating student-led discourse, teaching students how to think rather than what to think, and helping young adults extract timeless wisdom from classic works.
Key Responsibilities
- Socratic Seminar Leadership: Teach 3 sections of humanities electives, transforming the classroom into a lively forum where students analyze primary sources, defend arguments rationally, and engage in respectful dialogue.
- Classical Curriculum Delivery: Guide students through rigorous thematic electives that bridge literature, classics, and history (e.g., The Greco-Roman Tradition, Epic Poetry and the Heroic Archetype, The History of Political Philosophy).
- Assessment of Excellence: Evaluate student growth with an emphasis on rigorous analytical writing, oral communication, logic, and seminar participation.
- Faculty Collaboration: Participate in Upper School faculty meetings to maintain alignment with the school's classical mission and core sequence.
- Current MN Social Studies or English Language Arts teaching license.
- Education:
Bachelor's degree in History, English, Classics, Philosophy, or a related Humanities field required; advanced degree preferred. - Pedagogical Alignment:
Deep commitment to the classical liberal arts tradition and demonstrated experience with, or a strong aptitude for, Socratic or discussion-based teaching. - Experience with,
- college preparatory rigor in a high school setting
- Paidiea or Socratic Seminar/Discussion methods
- PLC groups/Q Comp programs
Coaching or advising extra-curricular activities opportunities available
