Firefighter Engineer

Firefighter Engineers with the City of Stillwater protects life and property by responding to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergency events. Our Firefighter Engineers operate and maintain fire apparatus and related equipment, support fire prevention efforts, and assist with inspections and public education activities. This position ensures readiness through routine station, equipment, and apparatus maintenance and works varied schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.

Of Duties

The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs emergency aid activities including administering first aid and providing assistance as required.
  • Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
  • Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
  • Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.
  • Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment.
  • Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities.
  • Presents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics.
  • Performs salvage operations such as spreading salvage covers, moving furniture, sweeping water and removing debris.
  • Files reports and records on computer and paper
  • May be required to perform as a lead-worker, or as an incident commander until relieved by a superior officer.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the formal education, experience and training required. Education

  • High school diploma or GED certificate

Experience

  • 5 years related experience
  • Computer skills and software knowledge (e.g. Microsoft Office, Target Solutions)

Trainings, Certificates, and Licenses

  • MN State Firefighters License OR must meet the minimum State Firefighter Licensing Requirements.
  • Firefighter I
  • Firefighter II
  • EMT Certification
  • Hazmat Operations
  • Fire Apparatus Operator Certification
  • Valid Driver's License
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800
  • Ability to obtain CDL Permit within 3 months

Desired Qualifications: Education

  • Two-year associates degree in Fire Science or related field

Experience

  • 7 years related experience

Trainings, Certificates, and Licenses

  • Certification(s) in the fire service profession such as:
  • Fire Inspections, investigations, hazardous materials, high angle rescue, fire prevention education, advanced level EMS, extrication
  • Blue Card Command
  • Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO)
  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Science or related field
  • CDL Class B or Class A

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Proven knowledge of rope rescue techniques, knots and equipment.
  • Qualified in the application of standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials and fire prevention techniques.
  • Ability to perform strenuous activities or exert peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat or cold, and dense smoke.
  • Ability to think and act effectively in emergency situations compounded with high noise levels and intense stress.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.

Special Equipment Emergency medical equipment including automatic external defibrillator (AED), hydraulics, electric and air-operated rescue tools, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, radio, pagers, computers, phone and fax. Special Requirements No felony convictions.

Supplemental Information

Work requires many different processes and methods applied to an established professional or technical field. Supervision Needed:
This position either (a) carries out work with minimal supervision (i.e., the supervisor sets only goals, priorities, and deadlines; and the employee uses guidelines that cover most situations), or (b) follows the supervisor's directions on methods and desired results but modifies methods to resolve unforeseen situations and problems. Supervision Given:
Moderate coordination of work with other individuals (Non-Supervisory). Impact:
